For this project I worked with Lilly, and Michelle to create our lanterns. To create our installations our group was combined with Ethan, Andrew, and Evan’s group. My lantern group worked pretty well together, especially with the interviews because we were all engaged, asking questions, and we all wanted to get to know the interviewee. One of the issues that we had was related to our installation. We had our idea, but it needed to be reformed because of material issues. This resulted in a shorter amount of time to complete the installation even though we still had to work on our lanterns. One thing I could work on is giving my group more work to do so I am not stressed out as much. What I learned in Humanities from this project is how your beliefs define you and pave the path for your life. In Fahrenheit 451, Mrs. Blake died with her books when the firemen burn them down. It showed how she couldn't just let them burn her belief down, she needed to go with it. The human connections tasks helped me think about what I believe in, and how important that is to me. During the project, I used humanities thinking to ask interesting questions during our interviews, and just being aware of others beliefs and what they would do for them. I learned a lot related to physics in this project because of the circuits and motor work. At the beginning, I never thought I would be able to create an actual working circuit, but I did! The first string of lights that I made was really difficult because I didn’t realize that the led lights had a positive and negative side, and for all of them to work the resistor had to be on the starting side. I started just electrical taping the lights together so I could test if the strand even worked, and it took me about 3 hours to test and finally get it to work. When I finally got it to work I just screamed in excitement and the whole class went silent because of it. After I mastered the art of making the circuits, I was able to easily solder the strands and create a working parallel circuit with a switch in it. I was always using physics thinking while creating my circuits and trying to fix any issues I had and I was using mathematical thinking when getting measurements of the lantern and designing the panels in adobe illustrator. In spanish, we translated our artist statements for each lantern. I put the artist statement into google translate to get the translated version, then formatted it the same way as the original on a separate document. Something that made this part of the project even easier is the fact that Michelle is a spanish speaker. That meant after I put it in google translate, she was able to look over it and make sure everything was correct. I felt like I offered a lot to the group because I was always working extremely hard to make sure everything looked really good. If I was grading myself in terms of the class learning outcomes, I would give myself an A+. One of the learning outcomes I feel really strong in is work ethic. The entire project I was using my time well, and just working 100% of the time. If I had been off task, I’m not sure we would have finish our lanterns or our installation on time. One of the learning outcomes I could improve in would be oral communication. I think I did a good job at it, but I could have done better with communicating with my group about what needed to get done and when it should be done. If I was grading myself in terms of our class values I would give myself an A+ because I was always trying to exhibit all of the qualities. One I feel like I really excelled in was empathy because a lot of works days, one of our group member was gone for various reasons, and I had to be empathetic about why she was gone and that I could still finish. One class value I could grow in is responsibility because I could have kept better track of all of our materials. Overall, I am extremely proud of my final product because getting to see the look on our senior citizen and elementary students face when we gifted it to them was just priceless. I also feel like I did a good job explaining my work during exhibition and made everyone I talked to understand all of our interviewees and all the work that went into our lanterns. |
