Muralismo y Chicano Park: Reflection
What went well for my project was all of the prewriting we did, as well as the final presentation. Jonah and I worked really well as a team to split up all of the writing and make it really thorough and specific. That really helped us understand what we were going to be doing and why we were doing it. I also took a lot of time to memorize my spoken word so that I wouldn’t need the paper while presenting. I was able to do it off the top of my head for the presentation which I think made it feel a lot more natural. Overall, I put a lot of effort into all the work I did which really paid off. The only thing I would have changed about our project were the handouts I made. I created an info sheet on our subject that we were going to hand out during our spoken word. We ended up never getting to handing them out due to the quickness of the presentations. I really just wish we were able to use those and show off the extra work we did.
2. Que harias diferentemente el próximo vez?... porque?
If I had to do things different the next time, I would change our sign and once again, the way we used our handouts. I would change our sign because the material we used soaked up the spray paint, so the lines weren’t clean, and it was overall not super easy to read. My using paint, I think it would have popped more and turned out better. Like I mentioned before, I would change the way we used our handouts. Since the handout had the facts we used in our spoken word in both Spanish and English, the audience would have been able to understand what we said, and we would have been actually able to show the extra work and effort we put in.
The most significant part of this project for me was giving our presentation at Chicano Park. It was a really cool opportunity to feel the sense of community created by the murals and present in front of the beautiful art. Jonah and I walked around with our sign, and held it with pride as we presented. Jonah and I put a lot of emotion into our presentation which made it very impactful, and to see the way the audience reacted was very cool, especially considering how relevant our issue is. The history of Chicano Park and the controversies presented in the murals made presenting there a really memorable experience.
Over the course of this project, my writing and speaking grew an immense amount. In terms of my writing, all of the prewriting we did in both english and spanish. Though the Spanish part did receive help from google translate, being able to see your english transform into spanish still help you understand sentence structure, and new vocab words. In terms of my speaking, I did a spoken word in Spanish without a note card. I first had to learn how to pronounce the words, and then memorize all of my parts. This was big for me because it gave me a lot more confidence in terms of speaking spanish without any paper to assist me. I now know I can learn spanish, and say it confidently. I also learned a lot about the Chicano movement and muralism in general over the course of this project. Learning about this was really powerful, and gave me a lot of respect for the people leading the Chicano movement, as well as Chicano park. I think for people to fully grasp something, they need to know all about it first. Though I don’t know everything, learning about the power of muralism and Chicano really impacted me.
5. Hay comentarios o sugerencias?
Overall, I really enjoyed this project because of the focus on muralism and the chicano movement. The only comment that I have is that I wish we had more time to really craft our spoken words. I would have liked to practice more, and have had critique sessions to improve our pieces. I also wish we would have had time to create our own mural for the school. Overall, I really enjoyed this project and not only learned a lot, but also grew my spanish skills.
Muralismo: Essential Questions
1. What is Muralism?
Muralism is “A movement beginning in the early 1920s in Mexico in which the government commissioned artists to make art that would educate the mostly illiterate population about the country’s history and present a powerful vision of its future” (moma). Muralism was one of the only, and best ways to communicate with all people. Muralism also provided a way for artist to share their work, in ways they wouldn’t have been able to before. A mural, “a large picture painted or affixed directly on a wall or ceiling” (dictionary) would previously have been considered illegal due to the location, but since the government was paying these artists to do the paintings, it wasn’t. Muralism is a fantastic way to share a message with all people around the world.
2. What has been its power and enduring legacy in Mexico and the US today? Answer: As a result of muralism, not only are average citizens committed to maintaining public art, but average citizens are also capable of seeing a beautiful piece of art, as well as an important lesson, in their daily lives. People have become more receptive of the arts, as well as large reform.
3. What are some of the many social causes of the past and present that muralism
has magnified?
Muralism has magnified many serious social causes and issues. Muralism became popular after the Mexican revolution, as “artists created epic, politically charged public murals that stressed Mexico’s pre-colonial history and culture and that depicted peasants, workers, and people of mixed Indian-European heritage as the heroes who would forge its future” (moma). Many murals have done just that. They have shared people's political agendas, and shared visions of the future. This originated in Mexico, but has since been used in the U.S. as well after Diego Rivera of Los Tres Grandes came to the U.S., and did multiple pieces. One of our closest examples of muralism now days is Chicano park. Chicano park is filled with at least a dozen beautiful murals that challenge the current stance between Mexico and the U.S. Murals have, and most likely always will be used to share messages for everyone to see.
4. What is La Raza? Answer: La Raza means literally “the race” in English, but it holds a greater significance for multiple ethnic groups, who think of it closer to “the people.” It holds emotional and personal significance for Mexican-American rights activists. It’s also a controversial term, as some people believe it to be elitist, but people who believe in La Raza truly believe.
5. What is the Chicano movement about?... and what impact has it had on American society?
The Chicano movement is one of the most underrated movements during the Civil Rights era. The Chicano movement “encompassed a broad cross section of issues—from restoration of land grants, to farm workers rights, to enhanced education, to voting and political rights” (albany). This movement changed everything for Mexican-Americans because they were more involved with the U.S. political system, finally were getting payed for the hard work they were doing, and were able to get educated. Specifically the education reform has had one of the longest lasting impacts because when you are educated, it is easier to get better jobs. Latinos began to move up in ranks and finally feel like members of the society they lived in.
6. What does Mexican-American truly mean to you? Answer: A Mexican-American is someone of Mexican descent who lives in America. But it’s so much more. It’s someone who contributes to the economy, who works with their friends and neighbors to form a better America for everyone. It’s the spirit of friendship, community, and acceptance amongst everyone. It’s also someone of Mexican descent who lives in America.
7. What change (or revolution) do you want to see happen with your issue?
In terms of domestic drug abuse, we want to not only see a change in the amount of people addicted to these drugs, we want more awareness. By recognizing how drug addiction effects not only the user, but also the people close to the user, I think people will realise how drug addiction affects us all in some way. We want to see more support options, and overall better ways to keep these extremely addictive drugs off the streets. Drug addiction is an extremely important issue that needs to be discussed and addressed.
8. How can you make this change or awareness happen? Answer: To raise awareness and to solve this issue, we could post signs in apartment buildings, drugstores and pharmacies about the consequences of over-the-counter addiction. We could also talk to people smoking on the street, or people drinking in bars. We can talk to doctors about the effects of even simple over-the-counter drugs, like tylenol. Handing out flyers could also help, as well as recruiting others to tell their friends and families. We could talk to school-children about their parents, and whether or not the parents smoke or drink regularly.
