Maestros Creativos: Emmanuel Lubezki
1. I picked the Spanish cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki as my creative master, and I picked the movie Gravity as my piece to re express. The film shows all of what Lubezki’s best abilities are. The film opens with a 15 minute long shot, as well as many shots of the subject with the vast background behind them. The film allows you to take in the beauty of his shots, and isn’t filled with a bunch of dialogue. It features the beauty of space, and the conflict of not knowing what exactly to do when disaster strikes. The film is everything that Emmanuel is, and the absolute best of his work.
2. Many events and people in Emmanuel Lubezki’s life shaped him into the creative master he is today. Emmanuel’s grandmother originally grew up in Russia until she needed to escape during Bolshevik Revolution. She wanted to go to Hollywood to pursue her acting career, but ended up settling in Mexico City due to the quota restriction being maxed out for immigrants to enter America. She ended up meeting her husband and starting a family that would continue to reside in Mexico City. Emmanuel’s family was also Jewish, which made him very multicultural (Russian, Jewish, and Mexican cultures). Emmanuel ended up attending Centro Universitario de Estudios Cinematográficos (CUEC) which is one of the most prestigious film schools in Mexico. There, he met who would be one of his greatest influences and partners, Alfonso Cuaron. Alfonso and him became a director, cinematographer power duo in the industry. Emmanuel’s multicultural background, and collaborations made him one of the most highly acclaimed cinematographers of our generation.
3. For my piece, I will create a short film (1 to 2 minutes) that shares some of the same habits of Emmanuel’s cinematography. Some of his trademarks are his long takes, and ability to make a whole movie feel like one fluid shot. He also tends to place the camera behind the subject to show what they are looking at, as well as using silhouettes to show off the background. Using these techniques, I will tell a story without dialogue of someone who is just going through life, and has an out of body experience where they feel like they are floating and the world is with them until they snap back to reality. I want to tell this story because that is how I feel when I watch movies. It feels like everything else doesn’t matter, and I’m in whatever world the movie puts me in. It also plays with the idea of gravity and space, which is the themes in his movie, Gravity.
4. I want to present my piece with a movie poster. A movie poster sets the tone for the actual movie, and gives you an idea of the type of film, as well as look of the film. I will add references to the historical and cultural influences Emmanuel has had, as well as the films he has made. I can then present those things to the class by giving them copies of the poster as well as displaying it on the board. I can then present my film as almost a pitch, to see if they not only like the idea of the film, but also see if they think the themes I want to present about my creative master are represented. I feel like it is a new way to present my product, make it marketable, as well as show my creative master.
Espanol:
