My Life, 3 Ways
By: Allie Lorton
Scientifically
We are all made of atoms.
We are 70% water,
2 hydrogen atoms,
1 oxygen atom,
70%, water.
The other 30%,
Elements,
Elements made of,
Atoms,
We are atoms.
Culturally
I am from a family where family is always first,
School is second,
And sports are third.
We are all passionate about different things,
But always support what each other are doing.
I am from a devoted and affectionate home.
I ritualize Christmas with my family
every year, at my house.
We wake up before the break of dawn,
to see if Santa stuffed the cookies in his tummy.
Then, rush to the tree to rip open the boxes of unknown.
And even if we don’t like what’s inside, we still act like we are happy.
For thanksgiving, we are always at my aunts.
She decorates the table with glitter, glitter everywhere.
There are lit candles, everywhere, and we are
always hoping nothing sets on fire.
I am from a family where family is always first.
Metaphorically
My family is like the ocean.
My mom, the breaking waves.
Can be really big, burdensome to get through or dive under,
or can be really calm.
My dad, the shoreline.
Where the little waves come in,
It’s always calm but always a little invigorating,
and a little unforeseen.
My sister, the shifting tide.
The tide shifts a lot
Up down, back forth
And trust me, she can be shifty.
Me, outside the breaking waves.
Calm and quiet, but when the set, the biggest waves come through,
You are scared.
My family is like the ocean,
The deeper you go, the harder it is to touch the bottom of the sand.
But don’t worry,
You'll float.
