The Atoms Family Project Description
For this project, we read and watched the effect of gamma rays on man-in-the-moon marigolds by Paul zindel, made a model of an atom, and in a writing piece on how we scientifically metaphorically and culturally explain our family. We would then create The Atoms Family trees as our installation to hang the atoms on and display the writing pieces around. Then, all of this was presented at our mini exhibition. For the project, there were no assigned groups but there is a whole lot of critique and a lot of collaboration to make the installation. We gave a lot of critique to each other on our atoms and SCM writings. I also worked with a partner to design and organize the installation of the trees. We worked extremely well together to get it done by the time it needed to be done because we needed to direct the entire team so they knew who was painting the trees, who was putting the pegs in the trees, and when we're ready for people to hang up their atoms on the trees. Since we directed everyone in that manner, we were able to get the trees up and looking good by our many exhibition. Some areas I could grow as a group member that I noticed throughout this project would be to not be as controlling because I feel like I was controlling people too much when directing them, when I could have just told them what to do and believed in them that they could do it. In terms of our classes learning outcomes, I was able to use them all in a way that help me progress my learning. With work ethic I was always working hard to get the work done for class first so that I could work on the installation with my partner. With collaboration, once again I was able to direct the group so we could get the trees done and I also gave people specific critique on their writing pieces and their models. With oral communication, I had to communicate to my peers to tell them what they could do to help set up the trees, and I also had to present my work at the mini exhibition by describing the process. With written communication, I had to figure out ways to present my family scientifically metaphorically and culturally which was a very difficult thing to do. With content, add to figure out ways to go above and beyond the requirements. For example, I blue printed and as I the whole tree installation, and decided to go a poetic route with my writing piece. In terms of our class values, I was able to use them to keep myself sane throughout this project. With empathy, had to understand why we had to wait to put the trees up, And understand other people's critique they were giving me so I can apply it to my work. With grit, throughout the project we had to constantly invent new ways to make the trees hang up properly, or how to get the most bang for our buck. I also had to use grit when I wasn't very happy with how my rough draft of my atom looked, so I decided to just completely redo it so I was proud of it. With responsibility, I had to be responsible leading the class in how to help with the trees. With respect, when moving atoms around the trees, or giving critique, I always had to be extremely careful with what they made. With integrity, I always needed to be working on what I said I would be working on even when they weren't watching me work. I am so happy I made sure I was aware of the class values because if I was not then taking the challenge option of creating the trees would have felt like the wrong decision. I felt like I offered a lot to the group because I designed the trees for everyone so that they did not have to do it, and I gave good critique to others so that their products could be better in the end. If I had to grade myself in terms of our learning outcomes in class values I would give myself an A+ because I took challenge options that really did challenge keeping up with the class values and learning outcomes, but in the end managed to keep up with them. I felt like the mini exhibition was a great platform to explain the challenge options that I took and just explain how proud I was of the work that I did. I do wish that I talk to more people and was more outgoing to do so. Overall, this project was a great opportunity to give myself some reassurance that I can take challenge options that are going to be difficult, and that I can do them without stressing myself out too much. |
